Membership

Whitworth students who express interest in joining WSIG start off as non-voting Affiliates. Those who wish to become voting members (also known as Analysts) are required to complete a six-week training program. The six-week training process encompasses the basics of stock market definitions and ends with practice using valuation tools. Upon completion of the training program, committed Affiliates may apply for Analyst positions by interviewing with the Executive Committee. Aspiring Analysts are then required to research and present a recommendation of a security of their choosing to a group of current Analysts. After this process, Affiliates are provided with feedback and either voted into the group as Analysts or given guidance toward areas of improvement.

Analysts are responsible for managing the portfolio and are assigned to one of six sectors: Consumer Goods, Energy, Financials, Healthcare, Industrials, or Technology. Analysts operate under the guidance of a Sector Head who has ex- tensive knowledge of their sector and discuss market events once a week as a smaller group. Sector Heads work with Analysts to evaluate investment opportunities and prepare detailed pitches to present to the group at large. After Analysts pitch their formal recommendation to the group, the floor is opened to discussion and questions. The Analysts then vote on the security.

The overall investment strategy is managed by the Investment Committee. Consisting of Sector Heads and the Board of Executives, the Committee is assembled by the Chief Investment Officer and is pivotal in guiding the investment process for the entire group. The committee meets once a semester to discuss both current and forecasted market moves and prepare a market commentary report. The committee fuels discussion amongst the group’s members regarding financial markets and WSIG’s overall investment strategy.
