Our Impact

community engagement

The Whitworth Student Investment Group continually seeks to align outreach events with Whitworth University's key values of serving others. Throughout the school year, WSIG has been involved with outreach at Rockwood Retirement Community, Ronald McDonald House, and the Salvation Army. In October of last year, the WSIG partnered with Village Center Cinemas to host a fundraiser movie night to support the victims of Hurricane Harvey. In September, students organized a concert to fundraise for those affected by Hurricane Florence. This marks the second time WSIG has reached outside of Whitworth to service a community so far from home, and it is our goal that these kinds of opportunities continue to be explored and pursued.

In the Spring of 2018, we hosted the first Annual Whitworth Investment Conference. High school students in the Spokane area joined us for a day full of learning, workshops, and speakers. This conference provides us with an opportunity to serve and engage with our local community. Our purpose has seen an expansion as we explore our ability to go beyond the core activity of portfolio management.

In March of 2018, The Whitworth Student Investment Group sent representative students to the Quinnipiac Global Asset Management Education (G.A.M.E.) Forum. This conference is attended by over 150 other universities, including 1,500 participants, and 140 keynote speakers, panelists, and hosts. Matthew Wilkinson ’18, Nathan Segarra ’18, Michele Whan ’18, and Derek Ramage ’20 attended three days of lectures from finance professionals and news commentators. The forum consisted of many different breakout sessions, panels, workshops, and opportunities to obtain a deeper insight into the financial services industry. This is the fourth year in a row that Whitworth University was able to send representatives to the Quinnipiac G.A.M.E Forum. WSIG would like to thank Ken Roberts for his generous donation. Without Mr. Roberts’ help, the Whitworth School of Business would not be able to send students to this conference.

cfa institute research challenge

The CFA Institute Research Challenge is an annually held international equity research competition that the Whitworth Student Investment Group has competed in the past five years. Competing in the challenge requires teams to analyze and value a publicly traded company and provide an investment recommendation.

The opportunity to compete in the CFA Institute Research Challenge is among the most valuable offered at Whitworth University, and for the sixth year in a row, WSIG has taken home first place in the local round. Our five person team published an extensive research report and constructed a thorough presentation which they used to defend their analysis of Banner Bank (NYSE:BANR). They competed again on a regional level in March virtually this year.
