Mission

The Whitworth Student Investment Group (WSIG) seeks to provide students with the opportunity to take part in investment management. Our mission is to increase our members’ learning through market analysis, valuation techniques, portfolio management, and in-depth equity research processes. Additionally, the WSIG is an opportunity for students to improve their communication, presentation, and public speaking skills as well as gain leadership experience and work within a team in a goal-oriented environment. Members are able to leverage this experience within their careers and within the job seeking process with a strong alumni network and support from faculty.

About Us

The Whitworth Student Investment Group is responsible for managing the Robblee-Roberts Student Investment Fund as part of Whitworth University’s endowment. The group consists of undergraduates who represent different academic disciplines but share a mutual curiosity for understanding financial markets. The structure and operation of the group resembles a professional organization and gives students an opportunity to receive an experiential education as an undergraduate. The qualitative and quantitative skills members have gained through their involvement with the group have increasingly prepared students to succeed in the professional world upon graduation.

History

The idea for the Whitworth Student Investment Group originated from the minds and leadership of three students: James King, Austin Vierra and Makayla Palmer; and in 2012, with help and assistance from the Whitworth University Board of Trustees, the Robblee-Roberts Student Investment Fund, and Associate Professor of Finance Duff Bergquist, this idea was made into a reality and the WSIG became a reality. Since inception, the group continues to carry out its mission to foster intellectual curiosity and experiential learning.

The group has transformed in many ways over the past seven years, armed with a director team, a Capital IQ subscription, and over $145,000 under management. A catalyst to this success lies within its excellent mentors and dedicated analysts. Group members are successful individuals that possess strong critical thinking skills and the discipline to stay focused and motivated. More importantly, the WSIG has learned to invest in its people, teaching communication and leadership skills that will have an enduring impact on its members’ careers.
